Regional Studies Center Holds a lecture on University Education

The Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul held a scientific lecture titled “University Education Between Traditional Performance and the Demand for Knowledge”, delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Fares Turki Mahmoud, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, in the presence of a number of professors and researchers.
The lecture aimed to highlight the importance of higher education as a fundamental pillar in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in areas such as ending poverty (Goal 1), improving the quality of education (Goal 4), gender equality (Goal 5), decent work and economic growth (Goal 8), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (Goal 9), reducing inequalities (Goal 10), and peace, justice, and strong institutions (Goal 16).
The discussion covered the current state of higher education in Iraq and explored ways to enhance and modernize it in line with contemporary knowledge requirements and labor market needs. It also addressed the main challenges facing the educational system. Dr. Mahmoud proposed several solutions, most notably strengthening partnerships between universities and the private sector, adopting digital education, and updating curricula to keep pace with global scientific advancements.
