Regional Studies Center

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi, President of the University of Mosul, and on the occasion of World Water Day, Regional Studies Center, in cooperation with Remote Sensing Center at the University of Mosul; the House of Iraqi Expertise Foundation and the Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies “ORSAM” in Turkey, organized the eleventh joint international electronic scientific symposium titled (Regional Water Reality: Iraq and Turkey as a Case Study) on March 22, 2021.
This symposium aimed to shed light on the regional water reality and water problem in Iraq and Turkey in detail, to know the Turkish viewpoint towards this problem, and the most important obstacles facing its treatment, as well as to activate dialogue and cooperation; implementing some of the proposed initiatives, especially from the Turkish side, which helps in solving this dilemma between the two neighboring countries to reduce the negative effects on the political and economic fields of the bilateral relations.
The symposium came out with many recommendations, including improving the performance of water treatment plants and establishing more of them to ensure the delivery of clean water to the population. Achieving the maximum benefit from rain and torrential water, and regulating the utilization of them in feeding the surface and deep aquifer. Protecting water resources from pollution, especially those resulting from the establishment of water projects, and conducting accurate studies about them, as happened with the Istanbul Navigational Canal project and its impact on the fresh underground reservoir. The implementation of the integrated management project of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers among the three countries, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, similar to what has been applied among the Mekong River Basin countries in Asia, whose public interests are taken into account by the nations.
