The Tourism Sector Confronts Drug Abuse… A Pioneering Awareness Workshop at the College of Tourism Sciences

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmood Al-Ibrahimi, and in line with the university’s efforts to promote awareness and combat negative social phenomena, the College of Tourism Sciences, under the supervision of its Dean, Prof. Dr. Manal Raafat Khalid, and in cooperation with the Directorate of Drug Control and Psychotropic Substances, organized a workshop titled “The Role of the Tourism Sector in Preventing Drug Abuse” on Monday, December 1, 2025.
The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of combating drug abuse by promoting preventive awareness within the community, encouraging responsible behavior among individuals, and emphasizing the vital role of the tourism sector in creating a safe and attractive environment for tourism.
The workshop featured presentations by Brigadier Legal Officer Abi Hashem Aziz, who addressed the legal aspects and mechanisms for combating the spread of drugs, and Prof. Dr. Raed Ameer Abdullah, who discussed the social impact of drugs and their implications for the development of the tourism sector.
The event witnessed active engagement from attendees, who raised several questions that were addressed by the speakers with great openness, enriching the discussion and enhancing participants’ understanding. At the conclusion of the workshop, the Dean of the College presented certificates of appreciation to the speakers in recognition of their valuable efforts.
The workshop aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supports Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being by addressing the health risks associated with drug abuse, and reinforces Goal 4: Quality Education through awareness and educational initiatives. It further contributes to Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by helping create a safer environment for the tourism sector, while also advancing Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities through promoting community awareness and responsible behavior. In addition, the workshop supports Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by strengthening legal awareness and protecting society from drug-related crimes. Finally, it reflects the spirit of Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as it represents effective collaboration between the university and security authorities in pursuit of sustainable community development.
