Seminar discussion
The Dams and Water Resources Research Centre as a part of its planned activities for the academic year 2013-2014, held its first discussion seminar on Tuesday 17/9/2013, presented by Prof. Dr. Nabeel Al-Saigh. The title of the seminar is " Two-dimensional geoelectrical prospecting of Bab- Sinjar Satdium, capacity 20000 spectators". The researcher indicated that voids were encountered during Bab-Sinjar stadium construction in Mosul city. Drilling in the site showed the presence of cavities and zone of weak rocks in some boreholes. This led the necessity of studying the presence of further cavities in the project area. Surface geophysical methods can successfully be applied to detecting and mapping cavities, fractures and other subsurface features. A 2D resistivity imaging method was successfully applied in the proposed site of the Mosul Stadium Project, which gave very clear pictures of the cavities and weak rock zones in the subsurface. According to the resistivity results, the civil engineers have done major changes to the foundation of the stadium.
