Community Service (2023–2024)

Scientific Collaboration between the Water Resources & Dams Research Center and Government Institutions
Thanks to the Center’s strong reputation and high scientific expertise, our faculty have been appointed to several ministerial and governorate‑level committees to support public institutions, including:

  • Assoc. Prof. Qutaiba T. Al‑Yousbi, Director of the Water Resources & Dams Research Center, appointed to the Nineveh Water Scarcity Committee. His role is to propose and follow up on rain‑harvesting projects and review submitted research. Appointment formalized by University of Mosul Scientific Affairs Order No. 5/5/1839 (25 Jan 2022) and Nineveh Governor’s Office Order No. 148 (10 Jan 2022), and remains active.
  • Assoc. Prof. Khalil I. Osman appointed to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction Committee, tasked with compiling and maintaining a database of all disasters (industrial, health, agricultural, and service sectors) in Nineveh Governorate. Appointed by the Disaster Management Cell / Operations & Infrastructure Center Order No. M.ʿ/139 (16 Feb 2020).
  • Guest Lectures by Assoc. Prof. Khalil I. Osman to PhD students in the College of Engineering at the University of Duhok, under University of Mosul “No Objection” Letter No. 5/5/6423 (21 Feb 2024) for the 2023/2024 academic year.

  • Campaign Wall‑Posters: Our Documentation Unit produced and displayed posters celebrating trees and promoting environmental stewardship throughout the Center, alongside materials from the Government Media & Communications Department.
  • Women’s Affairs Volunteer Event (11 Mar 2024): The same female team volunteered for the “Feeding the Pilgrims” campaign organized by the Women’s Affairs Unit, per Order No. 9/30/12867 (17 Apr 2024).
  • Chemical‑Risk Poster Team: Eng. Basma A. Al‑Jawadi & Ms. Dadd A. Ismail prepared a scientific poster on chemical hazards (Center Order No. 9/3/270, 10 Jun 2024).
  • Environmental Exhibition Visit (29 Apr 2024): Prof. Qutaiba T. Al‑Yousbi toured the “Environmental Applications for Sustainable Development” exhibition organized by the Nineveh Environment Directorate and the College of Engineering in the Student Center’s Arts Hall.
  • GIS Level II Course Lecture (22–26 Oct 2023): Eng. Basma A. Al‑Jawadi lectured in the GIS training course run by Nineveh Governorate and the University of Mosul.
  • Sustainable Engineering Ideas Course (28 Apr–5 May 2024): Assoc. Prof. Hadeer G. M. Adib lectured on sustainable engineering concepts for Ninawa cities.
  • Advanced Irrigation Methods Course (29 Oct–2 Nov 2023): Eng. Mohammad T. Mahmoud lectured for the Department of Dams & Water Resources, College of Engineering.
  • Library Partnership (9 Jan 2024): The Nineveh Water Resources Directorate library added our Center’s 1986–2019 publications database to support graduate students and specialized researchers.

  • 23 October 2022
    Prof. Qutaiba T. Al‑Yuzbakey chaired the “Committee for Addressing Water Scarcity in Nineveh” at the Governor’s Office, reviewing recently submitted projects to the Ministry of Water Resources, planning their implementation, and outlining the Committee’s future work.
  • 13–14 March 2023
    Our delegation—Prof. Al‑Yuzbakey (Center Director & Documentation Officer), Prof. Hadeer G. M. Adeeb (Liaison to the University’s Sustainable Development Committee), research engineers Mustafa S. Mustafa and Basma A. Al‑Jawadi (Documentation Unit), and coordinators Adi Y. Aziz, Mustafa M. M. Sadiq, and Mohammed A. Khaleel—participated in Mosul University’s Sustainable Development Festival. We exhibited six posters showcasing applied research on sustainable water-resources management, geological studies, and related infrastructure; demonstrated our laboratory equipment and testing services; and highlighted our training courses, symposia, and conferences on water‑resource sustainability in Iraq.

    Prof. Al‑Yuzbakey and Dr. Ali M. Suleiman represented the Center in a meeting with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Mosul University delegates (Departments of Dams & Water Resources, Agriculture, Remote Sensing, and Environmental Research). The IOM outlined its plans for resettling displaced persons in Nineveh and requested the University’s collaboration—providing research, proposals, and expertise in water‑use efficiency, drought and desertification mitigation, and sustainable water‑resource development to support agricultural livelihoods.

    Prof. Al‑Yuzbakey visited the Ministry of Water Resources’ International Rivers Division to discuss a joint study on Law 23 / 2007 regarding Iraq’s water allocations.
  • 28–30 May 2023
    The Center exhibited scientific instruments and poster summaries of our core activities—supporting postgraduate researchers, state agencies, and the private sector—in the First Mosul International Expo for Agriculture, Food, Water & Livestock (“Agriculture: Abundance and Everlasting Giving”), hosted at the University of Mosul’s Faculty of Physical Education, under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and the Governor of Nineveh.

    – Prof. Al‑Yuzbakey received a Medal of Participation from the University President for our role in the “Sustainable Development Festival.”
    – Prof. Adeeb was awarded a Certificate of Participation by the Festival’s Permanent Committee.

    Asst. Prof. Adeeb led a community‑service study—“Identifying Geotechnical Challenges in Old Mosul and Remediation Strategies”—submitted to Mosul Municipality (Study & Design Unit, Planning & Follow‑Up Division).

    Prof. Al‑Yuzbakey met with the Director of Nineveh’s Environment Directorate to plan joint scientific activities for the upcoming academic year.

    The Center provided a technical consultation to Nineveh Projects Directorate/Ministry of Youth & Sports (Letter No. 153 / 17-07-2023) on designing a 5 000‑seat stadium in Tal Afar.

    Conducted a detailed field assessment of sinkhole causes in Tal Afar for the Provincial Disaster Management Department.
  • 6 May 2019
    Professors Othman and Al‑Yuzbakey visited Mosul Dam with the dam’s engineering team—reviewing its current status and planning joint research initiatives.

    Met with Nineveh’s Director of Agriculture, Dr. Dreid H. Tobiya, to strengthen collaboration—discussing Tigris‑level impacts on canal banks, flood risks, and rainwater‑harvesting for agriculture. Invited the Agriculture Director to our 25 November 2019 symposium.

    Ms. Yusra T. Abdul‑Baqi and Eng. Hassan J. Abdullah collected climate data from the Agriculture and Water‑Resources Directorates plus Mosul’s Meteorological Office to support the Center’s research.

    Drs. Othman, Hassan, and Al‑Jawadi surveyed campus‐wide rainwater‐collection sites—planning mitigation methods for runoff.

  • Dr. Othman attended the Provincial Crisis Cell’s Disaster Committee meeting—coordinating flood‑mitigation measures, assigning agency roles, and allocating necessary resources.
