Symposium: “The Strategic Role of Mosul Dam”

Objectives:
To clarify the dam’s strategic importance as Iraq’s largest hydraulic structure—ensuring water security and flood protection—and to explore opportunities for socioeconomic development projects enabled by the dam.

Topics:

  • The strategic role of Mosul Dam in guaranteeing national water security
  • Documentation of construction, ongoing grouting operations, and dam monitoring
  • Assessment of the dam’s performance since its commissioning 33 years ago
  • Ongoing debates over dam safety and its future after 33 years of operation
  • Economic benefits: irrigation schemes, hydropower generation, water‑balance management, tourism, and fisheries
  • New scientific proposals to maximize the dam’s potential
