A Scientific Lecture on Biochar in Bashiqa to Promote Sustainable Agriculture.

A specialized team from the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research (C.AFCAR), in collaboration with the Ninawa Directorate of Agriculture and the World Food Programme (WFP), delivered a scientific lecture for farmers benefiting from biochar technology at the Bashiqa Agriculture Directorate on Monday, May 4, 2026. The team included Researcher Assist. Lect. Thakir Jasim Mohammed, Agricultural Engineer Sardar Hussein Aswad, Assistant Agricultural Engineer Ismail Hamid Ismail, and Assistant Agricultural Engineer Majid Abdulhamid Mohammed.
The lecture aimed to familiarize farmers with the importance of experimental biochar in improving soil fertility, increasing agricultural productivity, and reducing carbon emissions, in alignment with global trends toward climate-smart and sustainable agriculture. It also presented scientifically grounded methods for the effective application of this soil amendment to enhance the efficiency of natural resource use and support food security in the region.
This initiative is consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate Action), through its contribution to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
