Within the framework of promoting rural community development and strengthening the role of the agricultural sector in achieving sustainable development, the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research organized a scientific workshop entitled “Rural Development Between Past and Present.” The workshop was delivered by Lecturer Abbas Ahmed Ali and Assistant Lecturer Thakir Jasim Mohammed, researchers at the Center.

The workshop was held under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, Chancellor of the University of Mosul, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Mohammed Subhi Mustafa Al-Taweel, Director of the Center, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit at the University Presidency, on Sunday, 17 May 2026.

The workshop addressed the evolution of rural development across historical stages and the challenges faced by rural communities in the past, compared with the significant advancements witnessed today in agriculture, modern technologies, infrastructure, and social services. It also highlighted the importance of supporting farmers, empowering rural households, and achieving food security through the adoption of modern and sustainable agricultural practices.

Furthermore, the workshop aimed to shed light on the trajectory of rural development and its transformations over recent decades, emphasizing the importance of advancing the agricultural sector and rural services in improving living standards. It also discussed the challenges facing rural communities and potential solutions through scientific approaches and modern technologies that contribute to sustainable agricultural development and enhanced food security.

The participants emphasized that rural development represents a fundamental pillar for strengthening the national economy, given its role in reducing rural-to-urban migration, creating employment opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of rural populations.
