Innovative Environmental Technologies from the University of Mosul: Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research Trains Bashiqa Farmers and Conducts Field Soil Tests Using Biochar.

In support of sustainable agricultural practices and the transfer of modern technologies to farmers, a specialized team from the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research at University of Mosul—comprising several researchers and agricultural engineers—conducted a training workshop on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in cooperation with the Directorate of Agriculture in Nineveh Governorate. The workshop focused on the production and use of biochar fertilizer derived from olive residues.
This activity is part of a pilot program for biochar applications in agriculture, aiming to improve soil fertility, reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, and increase crop productivity, in alignment with global trends toward clean and environmentally friendly agriculture.
On the following day, Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the Center’s team continued field visits to farmers’ fields in Bashiqa and its surrounding villages. During these visits, the team conducted soil tests on plots treated with experimental biochar fertilizer to evaluate its effects on soil fertility and overall crop quality. These efforts are part of the Center’s commitment to supporting farmers and promoting sustainable farming practices, contributing to the preservation of natural resources and improving food production in the region.
These activities align with several Sustainable Development Goals, including:
-
Goal 2: Zero Hunger — by enhancing agricultural productivity and improving crop efficiency.
-
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production — through introducing environmentally friendly agricultural technologies and recycling agricultural residues.
-
Goal 13: Climate Action — by reducing carbon emissions and using sustainable alternatives to conventional fertilizers.
-
Goal 15: Life on Land — by improving soil fertility, protecting biodiversity, and preventing land degradation.
