Toward More Resilient Wheat: Evaluating Promising Lines for Drought and Heat Tolerance.

The Genetic Resources Department at the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research continues its research efforts to evaluate the genetic resources of cereal crops. As part of these efforts, a specialized team from the Center conducted field evaluations on Thursday, 10 September 2026, to complete the assessment of important agronomic traits in a number of promising drought- and heat-tolerant bread wheat lines.
The study involved monitoring and evaluating a range of key field traits of the wheat lines under investigation, with the aim of determining their ability to adapt to harsh environmental conditions, particularly high temperatures and water scarcity. Such field-based assessments provide essential scientific data for identifying superior genetic materials with promising potential for cultivation under challenging agro-environmental conditions.
These efforts reflect the Center’s commitment to strengthening the use of genetic resources and harnessing their potential in the development and selection of wheat varieties and breeding lines with greater tolerance to environmental stresses. Such research contributes to enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting the sustainability and resilience of wheat production in arid and semi-arid regions.
The study is aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger; SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being; SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production; SDG 13: Climate Action; and SDG 15: Life on Land.
