University of Mosul: Striving for Food Security and Sustainable Development – Mushroom Cultivation and Production at the College of Science for the First Time
In line with efforts to preserve natural resources, achieve sustainable development, and improve the quality of life for future generations, the College of Science at the University of Mosul has successfully cultivated and produced edible mushrooms for the first time.
The project, conducted by the Department of Biology, focused on cultivating the Agaricus bisporus mushroom, a member of the Agaricaceae family and one of the most widely consumed mushroom species in the world. This variety is highly popular in cooking due to its delicious taste, high nutritional value, low calorie content, and richness in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Additionally, it is a good source of fiber, enhances the immune system, and plays a significant role in traditional medicine for addressing various health issues.
The farm was established, and growth was closely monitored by Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, Assistant Prof. Dr. Hadeel Ahmed Al-Amri, Prof. Dr. Amjad Abdulhadi Mohammed, and Prof. Dr. Rayan Mazen Faisal.
Project Stages:
The project included several sequential stages:
1. Preparation of compost and seed inoculation
2. Fermentation stage
3. Spread phase
4. Covering phase
5. Shock phase
6. Harvesting phase
Congratulations to the University of Mosul on this remarkable achievement, and to the College of Science for this significant step toward ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.
