The Director of the Administrative and Financial Department in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Chairs a Ph.D. Dissertation Defense at the College of Administration and Economics on Extreme Financial Risks and Their Impact on the Financial Sector
Prof. Dr. Asaad Ghani Jihad, Director of the Administrative and Financial Department in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, chaired the discussion committee for a Ph.D. dissertation titled “Extreme Financial Risks and Their Impact on the Financial Sector: An Applied Study on a Sample of Banks Operating in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries.” The discussion took place on Thursday, January 23, 2025, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul.
The discussion was attended in part by Prof. Dr. Munir Salem Taha, Assistant President of the University of Mosul for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Thaer Ahmed Saadoun Al-Samaan, Dean of the College, as well as the Dean’s scientific and administrative deputies.
The study, presented by the student Omar Mohammed Fahmi from the Department of Financial and Banking Sciences, aimed to investigate tail risk and systemic risk and their spread within the financial sector of GCC countries. It emphasized the critical role of extreme and tail risks as a foundation for estimating systemic risk and its diffusion in the sector.
The study concluded that the stock returns of the analyzed financial institutions tend to exhibit extremity and non-conformity to the normal distribution. Additionally, the values of the extremity index (4) revealed significant disparities between countries and sub-sectors.
