The College of Veterinary Medicine Organizes a Scientific Symposium on the Risks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease to Livestock and Humans

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Mosul organized a scientific symposium today, Monday, February 24, 2025, under the title: “Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Its Risks to Livestock and Humans.” The symposium was attended by Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Munir Salem Taha, The Assistant of the President for Scientific Affairs, the President of the Veterinary Doctors Syndicate, the Director of the Veterinary Hospital in Nineveh Province, along with a distinguished group of faculty members, researchers, and students.
The symposium included several scientific lectures, beginning with an opening lecture titled “Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Its Risks to Livestock and Humans,” which addressed the economic and health impacts of this disease. It was highlighted as one of the most dangerous diseases affecting cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, sheep, and goats, with negative effects on milk and meat production as well as global animal trade.
This was followed by a scientific lecture titled “An Overview of the Viral Cause of Foot-and-Mouth Disease,” which focused on the biological characteristics of the virus responsible for the disease, its transmission mechanisms, and its spread.
The symposium concluded with a third lecture titled “Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Strategies for Its Control,” which discussed prevention and control methods, as well as the challenges faced by health and veterinary authorities in limiting the spread of the disease.
