University of Mosul and Nineveh Operations Command Hold Joint Seminar on the Phenomenon of Suicide

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and Major General Qutaiba Muwafaq Asaad, Commander of Nineveh Operations, and supervised by Professor Dr. Saad Ramadan Muhammad Al-Jubouri, Dean of the College of Education for Human Sciences, the college, in cooperation with the Operations Command, organized an advisory seminar titled:
“Towards a Joint Vision to Reduce the Phenomenon of Suicide Amid Psychological and Security Challenges.”

The seminar aligns with the University’s directives to strengthen partnership with state institutions. It featured a lecture by Professor Dr. Yasser Mahfouz Hamed, Head of the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences, alongside representatives from security agencies and a number of university faculty specialists.

The seminar addressed the seriousness of this phenomenon in society, particularly among youth, by examining its psychological, social, and security dimensions, including the rise of depression, the declining role of the family, weakened religious commitment, domestic violence, and addiction. The role of media in raising awareness and the importance of psychological and social support programs were also highlighted.

In conclusion, the seminar recommended establishing a national joint program through working teams comprising universities, civil society organizations, community police, and human rights activists. The program aims to reduce suicide cases through awareness and support for youth and families, alongside implementing sustainable solutions that provide real job opportunities, encourage creativity, and foster national belonging.
