Mental Health in Crises… A Scientific Symposium at Mosul University

The University Counseling Department at Mosul University, in collaboration with the Nineveh Health Directorate represented by the University Health Center, organized a specialized scientific symposium on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The event, held at the new university presidency building, carried the global unified slogan “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies.”
This symposium coincided with World Mental Health Day, celebrated every October, and aimed to raise community awareness about the importance of mental health and psychological support during crises and disasters, recognizing it as an essential component of integrated humanitarian response.
The symposium witnessed wide participation from faculty members, students, and specialists in the fields of psychological counseling and public health. The speakers included: Dr. Safia Adeeb Ibrahim Al-Chalabi from the College of Medicine, Dr. Faten Mohamed Zaki from the University Counseling Department, Dr. Ruba Abbas Fadel, and Mr. Mohamed Taha Mohamed from Nineveh Health Directorate.
The lectures addressed the importance of psychological intervention in crises and emergencies, the role of educational and health institutions in providing psychological and social support to the affected, and presented both local and global field experiences in dealing with the effects of psychological trauma.
The symposium concluded with recommendations emphasizing the need to integrate mental health programs into university and community plans, strengthen partnerships between the university and health institutions to promote mental health awareness, and contribute to building a more cohesive society capable of facing humanitarian challenges.
