Coexistence After Displacement, Counter-Extremism Strategies, and Reintegration of Returnees: Comprehensive Research and Insights at a Scientific Conference at the University of Mosul

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and in collaboration between the University of Mosul and the Iraqi National Security Service, the scientific conference titled “Coexistence After Displacement: Counter-Extremism Strategies and Reintegration of Returnees” was launched on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The conference, held under the slogan “Together for a Cohesive and Safe Society,” took place at the university’s grand theater.
The conference began with an opening session that included a speech by Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmood Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and a speech from the National Security Service delivered by Mr. Adnan Al-Kanani, the Advisor to the Service. This was followed by the screening of a documentary film that addressed issues of rejecting extremism and reintegrating returnees from displacement.
The conference aims to achieve a range of strategic objectives, including strengthening social cohesion and peaceful coexistence between returnees and host communities, combating extremist ideologies by building sustainable societal and educational awareness, and empowering displaced groups, particularly women and youth, by involving them in community development. It also seeks to enhance partnerships between academic, security institutions, and civil society organizations to adopt comprehensive approaches to human security and sustainable local development.
The conference witnessed wide official and academic attendance, including senior security leaders from Nineveh Governorate, influential religious and community figures, as well as representatives from government entities, international and local organizations concerned with the issue of returnees and human rights. Additionally, a distinguished group of researchers and academics specializing in political, social, and legal sciences participated, providing a solid scientific platform to exchange experiences and review field trials in establishing coexistence and stability.
