Mosul University Holds a Conference on the Role of Educational Institutions in Combating Drug Abuse as Part of Its Efforts to Strengthen Intellectual Security

 

Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and under the direction and supervision of Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of Mosul University, the University’s Counseling and Psychological Guidance Department, in cooperation with the Department of Media and Government Communication, organized on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the conference titled “Educational Institutions and Their Preventive Role in Combating Drug Abuse.”

The conference opened with the Iraqi national anthem and a recitation of Surat Al-Fatiha in honor of Iraq’s martyrs, followed by a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, marking the commencement of this significant national event.

The conference featured a series of key speeches and lectures, beginning with remarks from Professor Dr. Abdulrahim Ibrahim Jasim, the University’s Assistant President for Scientific Affairs. This was followed by a screening of an awareness video highlighting the dangers of drug use and methods of prevention.
Mr. Falah Mahdi Saleh, Director of Media at the Directorate for Combating Drugs and Psychoactive Substances in Nineveh, delivered a speech emphasizing the vital educational and guidance role of academic institutions before reaching the stage of legal accountability.
Additionally, Lieutenant Colonel Sorji, Director of the Anti-Drug Department at the National Security Service, presented an overview of the agency’s efforts in dismantling drug trafficking networks.
The sessions concluded with the opening of an art exhibition showcasing paintings and creative works that addressed the issue of drug abuse from an awareness and cultural perspective.

The conference witnessed wide participation from official and academic figures, including Assistant Professor Dr. Rafal Hasan Hamed, Administrative Assistant to the President of Mosul University; members of the University Council; deans; heads of departments; faculty; and students.
It also saw the participation of members of the ministerial committee from the Research and Development Department at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research—Dr. Hassan Nafel Jawad, Dr. Najah Nouri Abdulhassan, and Dr. Alaa Abdul-Kadhim—alongside representatives from the Directorate for Combating Drugs and the National Security Service, reflecting the national scope and institutional partnership in confronting this serious societal threat
