Art as a Tool to Combat Corruption… A Scientific Seminar at the College of Fine Arts on Its Depictions in Global, Arab, and Iraqi Theater Discourse

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Mosul held a scientific seminar titled “Corruption and Its Depictions in Global, Arab, and Iraqi Theater Discourse.” The seminar was organized by the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning/Unit for Sustainable Development at the University Presidency, with the participation of a select group of faculty members specializing in theatrical arts and criticism.
The seminar focused on the role of theater as an artistic and aesthetic tool capable of questioning the social, political, and economic structures that produce and perpetuate corruption. It analyzed how theater performances across different times and cultures have addressed this phenomenon.
The seminar delved into several key topics, including: deconstructing representations of corruption in texts and performances, analyzing characters, conflict, language, and the theatrical space, reviewing theatrical presentation techniques as a critical discourse that exposes corrupt practices and deepens societal awareness of their risks and effects on individuals and institutional structures.
This seminar is part of the university’s vision to use the arts and human knowledge to promote values of transparency and integrity, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions, to establish a culture of resistance against corruption within society through cultural and creative actions.
