Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Prof. Wahid Mahmood Al-Ibrahimi, and in the presence of Prof. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, the Department of Environmental Sciences held its second scientific symposium titled “The Tigris River and Sustainability Challenges” on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
The symposium, attended by a distinguished group of professors and specialists, opened with a speech by the Dean, who emphasized the importance of addressing the environmental issues related to this vital lifeline of Nineveh Province. Two scientific sessions followed: the first discussed the challenges affecting water levels in Iraq, while the second examined the environmental sustainability of the Tigris River within the context of conditions in Nineveh.
The symposium continued with an interactive discussion session that facilitated the exchange of expertise and the presentation of scientific insights and recommendations aimed at improving water management practices, enhancing usage efficiency, and developing sustainable strategies to preserve the Tigris River’s water levels and protect it from environmental degradation and harsh climatic conditions, thereby strengthening water and environmental security for the province and Iraq as a whole.
