Master’s Thesis Defense on Political Discourse Analysis Held at the College of Education for Humanities

The College of Education for Humanities at the University of Mosul held on Sunday, 7 December 2025, the defense session of the master’s thesis submitted by student Thaer Farhan Mohammed Zaid from the Department of English, titled:
“Solidarity, Power, and Ideology in Selected Iraqi Political Speeches: A Critical Discourse Analysis.”
The session was attended by Prof. Dr. Wahid Mahmood Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul; Member of Parliament Abdulrahim Al-Shammari; the Assistant of the University President for Scientific Affairs Prof. Dr. Abdulrahim Ibrahim Jasim; Prof. Dr. Saad Ramadan, Dean of the College; along with a distinguished group of faculty members, researchers, and students.
The discussion aimed to analyze how concepts such as solidarity, power, and ideology are represented in Iraqi political speeches through the frameworks of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and to explore the influence of these discourses on shaping public awareness and opinion.
This defense reflects the college’s vision of promoting rigorous academic research and supporting linguistic studies that connect language to its social and political dimensions. It also highlights the role of critical discourse analysis in understanding the discursive structures that shape public affairs, reaffirming the University of Mosul’s commitment to serving the community and equipping researchers with analytical tools to deepen their understanding of the relationships between discourse, power, and ideology.
