University of Mosul Discusses Irrigation Water Shortage Challenges and Their Impact on the National Agricultural Plan

The Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Mosul, held a scientific workshop addressing the issue of irrigation water scarcity and its implications for Iraq’s agricultural plan. The workshop took place on Monday, 8 December 2025, as part of the college’s commitment to promoting scientific awareness on water security issues and supporting national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to quality education and building communities capable of confronting environmental challenges.

The workshop discussed the impact of declining water storage on the agricultural areas designated within the plan approved by the Ministries of Water Resources and Agriculture, and the resulting pressures on food security and resource management. It also highlighted the importance of shifting toward modern irrigation technologies to increase water-use efficiency and enhance the sustainability of agricultural production, in line with the University’s vision to support scientific research that contributes to addressing priority national issues.
