Erasmus+ Unit (European Union Projects)

The Erasmus+ Unit, housed within the Department of Scholarships & Cultural Relations at the University of Mosul, plays an important role in driving the university’s internationalization efforts and promoting cross-cultural exchange through the European Union (EU) Projects. The Unit’s primary mission is to manage, facilitate, and implement the Erasmus+ & Horizon Europe programme for the university’s staff and students.

Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme dedicated to supporting education, training, youth, and sport across Europe and beyond.

Erasmus+ Unit is guided by a clear set of objectives, ensuring our activities strategically advance the University of Mosul’s mission for global outreach, academic distinction, and community development:

  • Promote Learning Mobility & Global Experience: We actively support students, staff, and individuals in gaining invaluable experience abroad, primarily through International Credit Mobility (KA171). This includes facilitating short-term exchanges, traineeships, and volunteering opportunities, providing direct pathways for skill development and personal growth on the international stage.
  • Enhance Academic Excellence and Innovation: By engaging with programs like Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters and Jean Monnet Activities, we significantly improve academic quality. We ensure our students and staff are exposed to cutting-edge research methodologies, innovative teaching practices, and specialized academic content from partner institutions worldwide.
  • Boost Cooperation and Institutional Capacity Building: Our unit actively champions collaboration between the University of Mosul and its EU and international counterparts through Capacity Building projects. This vital work focuses on sharing best practices, developing effective educational initiatives, and strengthening the structural capacity of local institutions in the fields of education, training, and youth.
  • Cultivate Intercultural Understanding and Global Citizenship: We provide participants with direct exposure to diverse global cultures. By fostering an environment where different perspectives are appreciated, we promote greater intercultural understanding not only among those who travel but also within the broader university community upon their return.
  • Build and Sustain International Networks: The Erasmus+ programs are a critical tool for establishing robust partnerships and networks with leading institutions abroad. We facilitate these connections to enable long-term collaborative research, joint academic projects, and shared platforms for knowledge exchange.

Projects involve multilateral partnerships between universities to develop innovative curricula, improve governance, and professionalize staff, ensuring institutions align with socio-economic needs and global trends like the Green Deal. CBHE is strategically designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of universities in partner countries, guaranteeing a long-term, sustainable impact on their higher education sector.

University of Mosul Participation within CBHE Projects

Project BANUU

The BANUU project (2020-2023), titled “Designing new pathways for employability and entrepreneurship of Iraqi students in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage,” focused on tackling student unemployment in the Humanities by creating new professional pathways. Its core objectives included developing a national framework for internships in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, enhancing Iraqi students’ entrepreneurial and transversal skills, and strengthening cooperation between universities and the public/private sectors. Ultimately, BANUU sought to modernize BA and MA degree programs by integrating real-world expertise and improving graduate employability.

Project INsPIRE

The INsPIRE project, “Innovative Governance Practices for Higher Education Institutions in Iraq,” was dedicated to implementing comprehensive institutional reforms across partner Iraqi universities. This initiative focused on achieving good governance by introducing values such as autonomy, accountability, and participation into university management systems. Key activities involved capacity building for staff and conducting study visits at European universities to deepen understanding of well-structured governance practices, ultimately contributing to the modernization and internationalization of the Iraqi higher education system.

Jean Monnet Actions are a dedicated part of the Erasmus+ programme aimed at promoting excellence in teaching and research on European Union (EU) studies worldwide. Named after one of the chief architects of European unity, these actions serve as a vector for public diplomacy, bringing EU knowledge and values closer to society and fostering global dialogue. The actions available for universities globally focus on establishing:

  • Jean Monnet Modules: Short teaching programmes (minimum 40 hours over three years) focused on specific EU topics, often multidisciplinary.
  • Jean Monnet Chairs: Teaching posts for a single university professor specializing in EU studies (minimum 90 teaching hours per academic year for three years).
  • Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence: Hubs of competence and knowledge on EU subjects that pool expertise, develop joint activities, and actively reach out to policymakers and the broader public.

The goal is to enhance knowledge, support EU policy-making, and strengthen the EU’s role in a globalized world, ensuring that the next generation of professionals understands European integration and its impact.

How to Apply for Jean Monnet Actions

The Jean Monnet Actions are grants awarded to higher education institutions (HEIs) to implement new academic projects. The application process is centralized and competitive:

  1. Identify the Action: The HEI must first decide which specific action best fits its goals (Module, Chair, or Centre of Excellence).
  2. Consult the Programme Guide & Call: The institution must carefully consult the relevant section of the annual Erasmus+ Programme Guide for detailed eligibility, award criteria, and funding rules.
  3. Prepare the Proposal: The faculty or department must develop a comprehensive project proposal outlining the project’s relevance, the quality of its design and implementation, the planned impact, and its sustainability.
  4. Submit to EACEA: Applications must be completed electronically via the European Commission’s Funding & Tender Opportunities Portal (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/) before the annual deadline. The submission is managed by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), which evaluates and selects the projects to be funded.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM): A prestigious international master’s programme jointly designed and delivered by a consortium of higher education institutions. It requires studying at a minimum of three institutions from at least three different countries, often resulting in a joint or multiple degree upon graduation. https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/opportunities/opportunities-for-individuals/students/erasmus-mundus-joint-masters
