The Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul holds a seminar on methane and its role in climate change

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul held a seminar titled “Methane and its Role in Climate Change,” as part of its scientific activities aimed at raising environmental awareness and strengthening academic efforts to combat climate change.
The lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Zakaria Nafie Mahmoud.
The lecture addressed the importance of reducing methane emissions as a pivotal step in combating climate change. He explained that this gas is the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, emitted primarily from the agricultural sectors, fossil fuels, landfills, and wetlands.
The lecturer noted that reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest and most effective ways to slow global warming, emphasizing that these efforts are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
This panel discussion comes as part of the Center’s efforts to enhance environmental knowledge among the academic community and shed light on global environmental issues, contributing to supporting national and international efforts to combat climate change
