The Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul Holds a Seminar on Green Tax Evasion

On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul held a seminar entitled “Green Tax Evasion,” attended by a number of researchers and academics specializing in the fields of economics and the environment.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Raghad Hashim Al-Mallah.
She addressed the concept of green tax evasion as a complex issue that combines economic and environmental aspects, given its direct impact on the effectiveness of tax policies aimed at protecting the environment.
She explained that some companies resort to avoiding environmental taxes by exploiting legal loopholes or concealing their true emissions and environmental costs. This leads to a decline in government revenues allocated to pollution control projects and negatively affects sustainable development efforts.
I concluded that these practices lead to unfair competition between companies that adhere to environmental standards and those that circumvent the laws, negatively affecting market stability and the fair distribution of environmental burdens, and are inconsistent with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
