The Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul Holds a Seminar on Organic Agriculture for a Sustainable Environment

The Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul held a scientific seminar entitled “Organic Agriculture for a Sustainable Environment” on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, with the participation of several faculty members and researchers from the center.
The lecture was presented by Assistant Professor Nahla Salem Hamouk.
She addressed the concept of organic agriculture as an agricultural production system that relies on utilizing natural resources in ways that maintain ecological balance, while avoiding the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides, as well as genetically modified organisms.
The lecturer explained that organic agriculture aims to produce healthy and safe food while simultaneously protecting the environment and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for future generations. She also pointed out its active role in protecting soil from degradation by improving its fertility and increasing its organic matter content, in addition to preserving biodiversity by encouraging beneficial organisms and reducing chemical pollution.
She added that this type of agriculture contributes to reducing water and air pollution and limits greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional agriculture, making it a strategic option for addressing environmental and climate challenges.
The panel discussion addressed the social and economic dimensions of organic agriculture, highlighting its contribution to improving human health by reducing pesticide residues in food, as well as supporting rural development by providing employment opportunities and generating sustainable income for farmers.
The panel concluded by emphasizing that organic agriculture is one of the most important solutions for achieving a sustainable environment that combines agricultural production, nature conservation, and community health. These efforts align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate action).
