Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul Hosts a Workshop on Gene Banks and Food Security

Under the auspices of the President of the University of Mosul and the supervision of the Director of the Environmental Research Center, the center held a specialized scientific workshop today, April 21, 2026, titled: “Gene Banks and Their Role in Achieving Food Security and Food Sustainability”

The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Nahla Salem Hamook, who emphasized the strategic importance of preserving genetic resources and developing climate-resilient strains as a fundamental pillar for addressing global food challenges Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Addressed:

This workshop aligns with the university’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically:

  • Goal 2 (Zero Hunger): By enhancing the genetic diversity of plants and livestock to ensure sustainable production.

  • Goal 13 (Climate Action): Through the conservation of genetic assets capable of adapting to harsh environmental conditions.

  • Goal 15 (Life on Land): By protecting biodiversity and preventing the extinction of local species.
