The University of Mosul Completes the First Volume of “History of Environmental Science in Iraq

The University of Mosul participated in the First International Environmental Conference in Baghdad, organized by the Bahr al-Ulum Charitable Foundation in cooperation with the Al-Alamein Center, under the patronage of Prime Minister Eng. Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Under the theme “The Iraqi Environmental Encyclopedia: Documenting the Environmental Heritage and a Knowledge Drive Towards a Sustainable Regional Future,” the first international scientific conference of the Al-Alamein Center for Environmental Studies, Climate Change, and Water was held from October 17-18, 2025, in Baghdad.

The conference witnessed active participation from the University of Mosul, represented by the completion of the first volume of the book “The Iraqi Environmental Encyclopedia,” which covers the history of environmental science in Iraq. The book was authored by Assistant Professor Dr. Saba Khairuddin, Director of the Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul. This publication is part of scientific efforts aimed at documenting the environmental heritage and promoting knowledge-based progress toward a sustainable future. The conference was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Mr. Helu Al-Askari, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, along with representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Water Resources, Environment, and Health, as well as representatives from the Advisory Board, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Turkish government, and the United Nations.

It is worth noting that the University of Mosul team was the first among Iraqi universities to complete and fully prepare this volume, reflecting its scientific leadership in the field of environmental studies.

On the sidelines of the conference, Assistant Professor Dr. Saba Khairuddin met with His Excellency the Minister of Environment, who praised the University of Mosul’s efforts in protecting the environment and preserving its resources. The two sides also discussed the possibility of the university’s involvement in the “Makhmur Nature Reserve” project.

The University of Mosul’s community service programs have also received widespread acclaim, particularly its initiative to introduce environmental sciences into the primary school curriculum. This initiative aims to foster environmental awareness among new generations and promote a culture of environmental conservation and combating pollution.
