As part of the Mosul Studies Center’s efforts to develop the library’s status, and as part of the project to restore the University of Mosul’s Central Library in cooperation with UNESCO, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Nizar Al-Dabbagh, Director of the Mosul Studies Center and Head of the Library Committee at the Center, along with Ms. Shahd Waadullah Yassin, the Center’s Librarian, participated in a specialized scientific workshop organized by the Central Library at the University of Mosul in cooperation with Dr. Hussam Al-Zalbani, UNESCO’s expert and consultant for capacity building and Assistant Professor of Information Science at Cairo University. The workshop, titled “Transforming from a Library to a Center of Knowledge and Education – Vision and Objectives,” was held from July 7-8, 2025, in the laboratory hall of the Central Library, for a period of three and a half hours. This training was in implementation of the directives of the esteemed President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Wahid Al-Ibrahimi, regarding the necessity of supporting technical cadres and developing their skills as one of the fundamental pillars of the university’s advancement. A number of Central Library staff and branch librarians participated in the workshop. The workshop included a visit from the University President and a meeting with the UNESCO consultant, who provided an explanatory explanation of the basics. The workshop aimed to introduce academic librarians to the principles and practices of open science, a modern global trend that promotes transparency, participation, and free access to scientific knowledge. Through this workshop, participants learned about basic concepts such as open access and open data, as well as the advanced roles libraries can play in supporting open scientific research within their institutions. The workshop included interactive lectures, practical examples, and group discussions, helping participants acquire practical skills that enable them to support researchers and develop their library services in line with open science standards. It also helped build specialized professional capacities that contribute to promoting innovation, expanding the circle of academic influence, and achieving equitable access to knowledge. This workshop represents an important step toward the digital transformation of the Central Library, which will contribute to preserving cultural and scientific heritage and making digital resources available to researchers and students, enhancing the library’s role as a primary source of knowledge and innovation. These efforts are part of the university’s vision to achieve comprehensive digital transformation and develop an integrated educational and research environment that serves the academic community.
