Seminar on Saudi Arabia’s Oil Policy and the United States’ Attitude to it 1980-2020

Regional Studies Center held a seminar entitled (Saudi Arabia’s oil policy and the United States’ Attitude to it 1980-2020) by Dr. Mithaq Khairallah Jalud al-Qarah Ghuli, head of the Political and Strategic Studies Department, in the presence of the Center’s researchers on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
The researcher, “Al-Qarah Ghuli”, said that the research aims to describe and analyze the oil policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since it took control of all shares of (ARAMCO) and the US position on this policy as the most important actor in the region. The research was divided into four axes. The first one included oil in the Kingdom since it was discovered in 1938 until 1980 and the significant transformations that took place during this period. The second axis touched upon the period of the eighties, especially after the collapse of oil prices in 1986.
The researcher added that the third axis covered the period between 1990 and 2019, which had witnessed changes and fluctuations in prices, in which Saudi Arabia had a major role. As for the fourth axis, it was dedicated to the Coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the oil market and how Saudi Arabia and the United States dealt with the matter. In sum, Saudi Arabia has largely controlled determining prices that are shared by the United States and competing with the Russian Federation. Oil prices may rise significantly after the end of the Coronavirus pandemic crisis.
