Regional Studies Center Holds a Seminar on Turkey and Competition in the Horn of Africa
Regional Studies Center held a seminar by Dr. “Afrah Nather Jassim Al-Azzawi” entitled “Turkey and Competition in the Horn of Africa”, in the presence of the Center’s researchers, on October 9, 2022.Al-Azzawi explained that the importance of the study comes from the geopolitical significance of the Horn of Africa, which controls the most influential seaport linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean at Bab al-Mandab Strait, which made it the focus of competition for many countries, including Turkey, as the latter developed an external strategy to gain a position in this region since 2002 represented in many political, economic and security dimensions.The researcher added that the study aims to shed light on the Turkish presence in the Horn of Africa and the most important active countries in the region.The researcher concluded that the study was divided into three sections:The first topic dealt with the geopolitical importance of the Horn of Africa region and the most prominent active countries in it. The second topic studied the motives and foundations of the Turkish orientation in the Horn of Africa. The third topic discussed the dimensions of Turkish imports and the essential obstacles.
