Regional Studies Center, as part of its practical activities, organized a workshop on renewable energy on November 23, 2022.The scientific workshop aimed to identify sources of renewable energy and the possibility of activating them to meet human needs as an alternative option to traditional energy sources that caused severe environmental damage one of its most prominent repercussions was the rise in temperature by one and a half degrees, which resulted in the planet’s exposure to several unnatural climatic changes, including Iraq. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the dimensions of these negative changes and their foreseeable and far-reaching effects on our country’s climatic and environmental security.The workshop included two papers by Dr. Nawfal Qasim Ali and Dr. Laith Mohammad Saadoun Al-Taan.
In his paper entitled (renewable energies, fossil fuels, and climate changes), Dr. Nawfal indicated through analysis and comparison that the task of societies is to slow down the process of climate change in its negative form in conjunction with the consumption of fossil fuels, on the one hand. On the other hand, the research paper indicated that the increase in economic capabilities, including finance had accelerated the technologies required to increase energy production from renewable natural resources.Despite this, these transformations remain limited to some countries without the majority of them due to the modest economic capabilities of the latter, so it would be optimistic if a significant reduction in polluting gas emissions was achieved in light of remaining on the consumption of fossil fuels.Dr. Laith Al-Taan’s paper titled (renewable energy and its role in reducing dependence on energy sources that pollute the environment), presented its rationale through two questions:
First: What is the actual feasibility achieved by adopting reliance on renewable energy in terms of its coverage of daily human needs?
Second: What is the economic feasibility of the financial costs involved in establishing projects related to renewable energy?Finally, the research paper indicated that there are still scientific and financial obstacles to these projects, in addition to that the energy productivity of these projects seems modest in comparison to the huge human consumption, and in comparison to the energy productivity from fossil fuels, so the development studies to activate energy production projects from renewable resources still needs more time to reach the convincing feasibility of adopting the option of relying on clean energy production methods.
