Regional Studies Center Holds a Seminar on Higher Education in Iraq

Regional Studies Center held a workshop entitled “Higher Education in Iraq: Reality and Ways of Development” on October 29, 2023.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the reality of scientific research in Iraq and its global position on the map of scientific research, and to reform higher education in light of global transformations, as reform and change begin with developing education to be a starting point for reforming Iraq’s situation in all fields.

The workshop included the presentation of Assist. Dr. Nawfal Qasim Al-Shahwan, a research paper entitled “Reforming higher education in Iraq in light of global transformations,” the first section of which dealt with the reality of higher education in Iraq and its indicators, sustainable higher education, sustainable development, and science management. The second section discussed higher education reform, responsibilities, challenges, opportunities, labor market outcomes, and the role of the private sector. The third section studied the international experience in higher education reform, financing, and measuring higher education reform as a beginning for reform in Iraq and financing higher education reform.

Assist. Dr. Mithaq Khairallah Jalloud submitted a research paper entitled “a Proposed Framework for the Development of Higher Education in Iraq: the Elite Project,” which is a four-stage plan to develop education in Iraq from the primary stage until the last stages of university study. The paper’s topics included the launch of the project that begins at the university stage to prepare competent male and female teachers; establishing advanced schools and curricula; following up on the project and overcoming obstacles; developing Iraqi universities over 16 years.

In conclusion, Assist. Dr. Fawaz Muwaffaq Thanoon  reviewed a research paper entitled “The Reality of Scientific Research in Iraq – a Proposed Framework for Developing Education in Iraq, the Elite Project,” which included several sections, including the concept of scientific research; the reality of scientific research in Iraq; obstacles and challenges of scientific research in Iraq. The workshop witnessed interventions and discussions that influenced its topic.
