Regional Studies Center Explores Women’s Political Participation Within Sharia and Legal Frameworks

As part of the activities of its Women’s Affairs Committee, and in cooperation with the Women’s Affairs Unit at the Presidency of the University of Mosul, the Regional Studies Center held a seminar titled “Women’s Political Participation Between Sharia and Law.” The seminar was presented by Assist. Prof. Dr. Batool Halil Jubair on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, in line with the Third National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security for 2025, under the cultural awareness pillar.

The seminar aimed to shed light on the religious and legal frameworks governing women’s roles in political life and to assess the extent to which national legislation aligns with human rights principles. It also sought to promote public awareness of the importance of women’s participation in decision-making positions. The session featured in-depth discussions offering analytical perspectives on the challenges women face in the political sphere and the role of educational institutions in supporting their engagement, in addition to showcasing successful examples of influential female participation in policymaking.

The seminar also emphasized the topic’s relevance to several Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 5 (Gender Equality), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The seminar concluded by underscoring the need to sustain institutional and societal efforts to create an enabling environment for women and to strengthen their political participation, recognizing them as essential partners in building peace and upholding the principles of justice and sustainable development.
