Regional Studies Center Hosts Seminar Titled Extremist Narratives and the Production of Terrorism: An Analysis of the Regional Reality

As part of its scientific activities aimed at examining the security and intellectual challenges facing the region, Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul organized a seminar titled “Extremist Narratives and the Production of Terrorism: An Analysis of the Regional Reality” on Monday, June 8, 2026, with the participation of a distinguished group of researchers, academics, and specialists in intellectual security and counter-extremism.

The seminar addressed the concept of extremist narratives and their role in shaping environments conducive to violence and terrorism, through an analysis of discourses and ideas that exploit political, social, and economic crises to reproduce extremism and justify violence. Participants also discussed the transformations witnessed in the region in recent years and their implications for the spread of radical discourse and recruitment mechanisms within terrorist organizations.

Speakers emphasized that terrorism is not merely a security phenomenon but rather the cumulative outcome of intellectual, cultural, and media narratives that entrench division, hatred, and the erosion of values of coexistence and citizenship. This reality calls for comprehensive approaches that integrate security, intellectual, educational, and developmental efforts.

The seminar also featured in-depth discussions on the importance of developing moderate national narratives that strengthen inclusive identity and promote the values of dialogue and tolerance. It further highlighted the role of academic institutions, media organizations, and civil society in countering extremist ideologies and dismantling their sources.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants recommended strengthening scientific research in the fields of extremism and terrorism studies, developing community awareness programs, and supporting initiatives aimed at peacebuilding and social cohesion, thereby contributing to sustainable peace and stability.

The seminar aligns with the University of Mosul and the Regional Studies Center’s commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), reaffirming that combating extremism and terrorism is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development and long-term societal stability.
