Identifying Suitable Sites for Water Harvesting Dams South of Mosul… A Seminar at the Remote Sensing Center

Within the framework of enhancing efforts toward the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 concerning clean water and sustainable management of water resources, the Remote Sensing Center held a seminar chaired by Dr. Akram Muhammad Saleh, entitled: “Identifying Suitable Sites for Water Harvesting Dams Using Remote Sensing Data and Geographic Information Systems Based on Multi-Criteria Analysis in Wadi Al-Qasab, South of Mosul, Iraq” on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

The seminar focused on how remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technologies can be used to determine the most suitable sites for constructing small to medium-sized dams for water harvesting in Wadi Al-Qasab, relying on multi-criteria analysis that includes terrain, soil type, rainfall rates, and river courses, with the aim of improving water resource management.

The seminar also addressed practical applications of these methods in supporting agricultural and environmental projects, reducing the risks of floods and droughts, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of natural resources and enhancing water security in Iraq.

The seminar concluded with an exchange of views and discussions among participants regarding the possibility of applying these methods in other areas and the importance of training scientific staff to use modern technologies in the field of remote sensing.
