Disaster Risk Reduction Unit
A disaster is defined as a serious disruption in the functioning of society resulting in economic, environmental, human or material losses that make it difficult for the affected community to cope. Disaster risks are of many types, including climate risks, hydrological risks, geological risks, astronomical risks, biological risks, human risks and climate change risks. Therefore, it was necessary to establish a platform for cooperation between academic, scientific and research institutions with the community to address these disasters before they occur. With this in mind, the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit at Mosul University/Remote Sensing Centre was established as the first research unit of its kind in Iraqi universities by university decree based on the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education. The unit aims to contribute to the reduction of these disasters through applied studies and research based on remote sensing data and reliable data issued by international organisations, in cooperation with the official authorities in Nineveh Governorate in particular and Iraq in general. In addition, this unit seeks to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction for the period (2015-2030) and the Sustainable Development Goals.
