University of Mosul Progresses with Structuring the “Iraqi Cultural Identity” Curriculum to Foster National Awareness Among Students
MOSUL | October 21, 2026
In alignment with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and under the direct guidance of the Vice President of the University of Mosul for Scientific Affairs, the scientific committee tasked with preparing, reviewing, and approving the syllabus for the “Iraqi Cultural Identity” course held its second meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The session took place at the headquarters of the Studies Division for Arab and Foreign Students at the University Presidency.
The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mejwvel Mohammed Mahmoud, Head of the Committee, and attended by its members. This session follows the issuance of an official university decree annex, which added several faculty members from the College of Arts to the committee. This inclusion aims to complete the necessary academic specializations and ensure cognitive integration in formulating the course’s topics and academic content.
Key Themes of the Initial Draft Curriculum
The Head of the Committee opened the meeting by welcoming the new members. The attendees then discussed the initial draft of the curriculum, which is structured over fifteen academic weeks and covers prominent scientific and cultural themes, including:
    • Concept of Cultural Identity: Examining the core elements that shape national identity.
    • Mesopotamian Civilizations: Highlighting their historical and civilizational contributions.
    • Iraq in the Arab-Islamic Era: Reviewing historical eras and cultural transformations.
    • The City of Mosul: Exploring its status and legacy as a historical and cultural metropolis.
    • Cultural Diversity and Coexistence: Dimensions of diversity within Iraqi society and values of peaceful coexistence.
    • Literature, Folklore, Arts, and Architecture: Studying Iraq’s rich creative and structural heritage.
    • Globally Registered Iraqi Heritage: Reviewing Iraq’s globally registered heritage and mechanisms for its protection and preservation.

Next Steps Toward Implementation
At the conclusion of the meeting, the committee agreed to distribute these main themes among its members according to their precise academic specializations to develop detailed content and identify accredited academic sources and references. Furthermore, the committee emphasized the necessity of completing, reviewing, and approving all syllabus details before the start of the second semester in preparation for its official introduction to students.
It is worth noting that incorporating the “Iraqi Cultural Identity” course into the core curricula primarily aims to foster national identity awareness, reinforce pride in Iraq’s ancient cultural and civilizational legacy, and introduce its historical and cultural diversity. This initiative is designed to develop students’ cognitive awareness and deepen their connection to their country’s history and heritage.
