1. Title

University of Mosul Carbon Reduction Policy

2. Purpose / Objectives

This policy aims to safeguard the environment and public health within the university campus by reducing carbon emissions and shifting toward renewable energy sources. The ultimate goal is to create a healthier, climate-friendly, and sustainable academic environment.

3. Scope

This policy applies to all University of Mosul buildings, facilities, and activities that involve the consumption of electrical energy within the campus.

4. Principles / Commitments

  • Sustainability: Commitment to adopting alternative energy sources that minimize harmful emissions.

  • Health Protection: Reducing the negative impacts of carbon emissions on students’ and staff well-being.

  • Innovation: Encouraging the integration of eco-friendly technologies, such as solar panels.

  • Environmental Responsibility: Minimizing the negative atmospheric impact of university activities.

5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

  • Solar Energy Installation: Implement projects for installing solar panel systems across campus under the supervision of the Electrical Unit.

  • Phasing Out Generators: Gradually reduce reliance on fossil fuel-powered generators.

  • Awareness and Incentives: Promote a culture of clean energy use and encourage the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

  • Minimizing Side Effects: Monitor and mitigate secondary impacts of campus activities that contribute to increased emissions.

6. Responsibilities

  • Electrical Unit / Maintenance and Services Division: Oversee technical planning and execution of solar energy projects.

  • Administrative Affairs Department: Monitor compliance with the policy and coordinate with relevant authorities.

  • University Administration: Provide financial and administrative support for policy implementation.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Conduct regular assessments of energy consumption rates and associated emissions.

  • Prepare semi-annual reports on the ratio of solar energy use compared to conventional energy.

  • Measure progress toward policy objectives and review performance for continuous improvement.

8. Review and Updates

This policy shall be reviewed every two years by the Maintenance and Services Division / Administrative Affairs Department, with amendments made as necessary in response to technical or environmental developments.
