University of Mosul Policy on Reducing Plastic Use
1. Title
Policy on Reducing Plastic Use – University of Mosul
2. Purpose / Objectives
This policy aims to protect the health, environment, and property within the university campus from the risks associated with plastic use, particularly fire hazards and industrial pollution resulting from non-biodegradable plastics.
3. Scope
The policy applies to all university buildings, facilities, and individuals within the campus, including construction, maintenance, and daily use of plastic materials.
4. Principles / Commitments

Public Health: Minimize health risks linked to plastic usage.

Safety: Reduce the likelihood of fire hazards caused by flammable plastics.

Environmental Sustainability: Decrease pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastic waste.

Institutional Responsibility: Commit to adopting safe and sustainable alternatives in all university activities.
5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

Prohibit the use of plastics as alternative materials in the construction or maintenance of university buildings.

Replace plastic bags with eco-friendly alternatives such as paper or cloth bags.

Launch awareness campaigns across the campus to educate about the risks of plastics and encourage sustainable alternatives.

Establish a mechanism for collecting and sorting existing plastic waste and sending it to certified recycling facilities.
6. Responsibilities
-
Services Unit: Oversee plastic waste disposal and manage awareness programs.

Water Supply and Civil Works Division (Maintenance and Services Unit): Ensure prohibition of plastics in building and maintenance works and replace them with non-flammable materials.

Administrative Affairs Department: Provide overall supervision of policy implementation and coordinate with relevant external entities.
7. Monitoring and Evaluation

Prepare periodic reports on compliance levels with plastic reduction goals.

Measure the volume of plastic waste replaced or recycled annually.

Monitor compliance with the use of alternatives in construction and maintenance projects.
8. Review and Updates
The policy shall be reviewed every two years by the Maintenance and Services Division – Administrative Affairs Department, and updated in accordance with environmental developments and national legislation.
