2. Purpose / Objectives

This policy aims to minimize the environmental impact of the university’s activities by adopting effective and sustainable waste management practices. It also seeks to establish an integrated system for measuring waste generation, tracking the proportion sent to landfills versus that recycled, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness and continuous improvement in resource use.

3. Scope

This policy applies to all facilities of the University of Mosul, including:

  • Academic and administrative departments.

  • Canteens and dining facilities.

  • Laboratories.

  • University events.

  • Daily activities that generate waste within the campus.

4. Principles / Commitments

  • Environmental Transparency: Regularly publishing data on waste generation and recycling.

  • Sustainability as a Priority: Promoting practices that reduce waste production, reuse materials, and enhance recycling.

  • Prevention and Risk Reduction: Minimizing landfill dependency and reducing non-biodegradable waste.

  • Shared Responsibility and Participation: Engaging the entire university community in environmental practices to foster a sustainable campus culture.

5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

  • Measurement and Monitoring:

    • Establishing a routine system to measure and document waste volumes.

    • Recording quantities sent to landfills versus those recycled.

  • Waste Management:

    • Installing dedicated sorting bins for recyclable materials (paper, plastics, metals, glass).

    • Partnering with licensed local companies to handle recyclable waste.

  • Waste Reduction:

    • Replacing plastics with biodegradable alternatives.

    • Encouraging reuse initiatives and reducing unnecessary consumption.

6. Responsibilities

  • University Presidency: Overall supervision and provision of resources to implement the policy.

  • Maintenance and Services Department: Waste collection, sorting, and coordination with external entities.

  • Academic and Administrative Units: Compliance with sorting mechanisms and waste reduction in their operations.

  • Students and Faculty: Participation in environmental initiatives and adherence to waste separation guidelines.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Issuing semi-annual and annual reports on landfill disposal versus recycling rates.

  • Measuring progress in overall waste reduction and sustainability targets.

  • Using quantitative indicators such as:

    • Percentage of waste recycled.

    • Rate of reduction in landfill waste.

8. Review and Updates

This policy will be reviewed at least every two years, or when new technical or regulatory developments arise, ensuring alignment with international best practices and advances in waste management systems.
