1. Title

2. Purpose / Objectives

This policy aims to integrate sustainability and climate action principles across all academic, administrative, research, and community activities at the University of Mosul. It focuses on reducing the university’s environmental footprint, enhancing climate awareness, and supporting innovation and research in environmental sustainability.

3. Scope

The policy applies to all colleges, administrative units, staff, students, and service providers within the university campus. It also extends to the university’s outreach and activities in the wider local community.

4. Principles / Commitments

  • Environmental Responsibility: Reduce the university’s carbon and ecological footprint.

  • Education for Sustainability: Integrate environmental and climate topics into curricula and academic programs.

  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with local and international partners to advance climate action initiatives.

  • Continuous Improvement: Regularly review environmental performance and develop updated sustainable practices and strategies.

5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

  • Sustainability Committee: Establish a dedicated committee to oversee policy implementation and recommend improvements.

  • Environmental Audits: Conduct annual audits of energy, water, waste, and emissions.

  • Training and Capacity Building: Organize workshops and awareness programs on climate change and sustainable practices.

  • Practical Initiatives:

    • Install solar panels to promote the use of clean energy.

    • Launch student-led environmental clubs and green campus initiatives.

    • Support research projects on water conservation, sustainable agriculture, and pollution reduction.

  • Green Procurement: Adopt sustainable purchasing practices and reduce single-use plastics.

6. Responsibilities

  • Sustainability Committee: Monitor implementation, prepare reports, and provide recommendations to senior management.

  • Colleges and Departments: Integrate sustainability measures within academic, research, and administrative activities.

  • Students and Staff: Commit to sustainable practices in daily activities and actively participate in environmental initiatives.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Prepare periodic sustainability reports including key performance indicators (energy, water, waste, emissions).

  • Engage colleges, students, and the local community in evaluating progress.

  • Review initiatives and adjust actions where necessary to ensure goals are achieved.

8. Review and Updates

The policy shall be reviewed every two years, or as needed, in response to emerging issues in climate change and sustainability or recommendations from the Sustainability Committee.
