The Center Organizes a Discussion Session on “Water Security in Iraq”

On Monday, October 27, 2025, the Center, in cooperation with the Department of Planning and Follow-up / Sustainable Development Unit at the University Presidency, organized a discussion session entitled “Water Security in Iraq”, delivered by Asst. Lecturer Mustafa Salem Mustafa from our Center.

The session addressed the water crisis facing Iraq, which threatens its water and food security, due to the reduced share of the Tigris and Euphrates waters caused by large dams in upstream countries (Turkey and Iran), in addition to deteriorating water quality due to pollution and salinity. The situation is further exacerbated by climate change, rising temperatures, low rainfall, and recurrent droughts, leading to a sharp decline in river levels and a reduction of agricultural lands.

The discussion also highlighted the main measures to address this challenge, including adopting an urgent strategy that involves:

  • Modernizing irrigation systems

  • Constructing dams

  • Implementing water treatment projects

  • Establishing regional agreements to secure a fair water share

  • Enhancing awareness campaigns to promote water conservation.
