As a miniature Iraq, the University of Mosul observes a minute of silence in memory of the 2014 Yazidi genocide.

On the anniversary of the heinous genocide committed against members of the esteemed Yazidi community in 2014, and in reflection of its identity as a microcosm of Iraq—flourishing through its rich diversity—the University of Mosul observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of the victims.

Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, led the commemorative gathering on Sunday, August 3, 2025, which was attended by members of the University Council, faculty, and administrative staff.

In his address, the University President expressed the institution’s deep solidarity with the Yazidi community, reaffirming the University’s commitment to justice, equality, and serving as an inclusive space for all segments of Iraqi society without discrimination.

Dr. Saeed Khdeida, Head of the Human Rights Unit at the University Presidency, also delivered a speech emphasizing the deep interconnectedness among Iraq’s diverse communities, and the vital need to stand united against all forms of extremism—guided by Iraq’s rich cultural heritage and legacy of coexistence.

As the University solemnly remembers this tragic day, it reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting Yazidi students and ensuring their full rights in a peaceful and inclusive academic environment, free from discrimination. The University also remains dedicated to offering all possible support and facilitation in line with approved regulations and policies.

The University of Mosul reiterates its pledge to uphold equal rights and responsibilities for all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of background. It calls for the continued documentation of such atrocities and urges international organizations to fulfill their obligations in securing justice for the victims and facilitating the return of displaced persons to their original homelands—for a safer, more unified Iraq.
