Mosul University Experts Document the Tragedy of Al-Khasfa Mass Grave in Specialized Academic Study

Under the supervision of Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, a team of experts from the College of Education for Humanities has prepared a specialized academic study on the Al-Khasfa mass grave in Nineveh Province, one of the most horrific crimes committed by the ISIS terrorist organization against the people of the province.

The study revealed that the grave dates back to the events of August 7, 2015, when the terrorist group executed around 2,070 military personnel and civilians and buried them in the deep pit known as “Al-Khasfa.” It is estimated that the number of victims buried there exceeded 20,000 during the group’s control of Nineveh.

The study was prepared by Prof. Dr. Fawaz Hamo Al-Neish, Lecturer Asmaa Khalid Jirjis, and Lecturer Nazzal Ahmed Ibrahim, who documented the humanitarian, social, and legal dimensions of this crime. The researchers also presented key recommendations, including the establishment of a memorial for the victims of Al-Khasfa and preventing the site from being exploited for any future criminal purpose.

These efforts were carried out in coordination with the Presidency of the Nineveh Court of Appeals, Nineveh Governorate, the Mass Graves Committee, the Iraqi Mass Graves Directorate, and the specialized forensic excavation team.
