University of Mosul Policy on Reducing the Impact of Invasive Species on Campus

2. Purpose / Objectives

  • To protect local biodiversity within the university campus.

  • To minimize the negative impacts of invasive species on native plants and animals.

  • To enhance environmental sustainability and raise awareness about the importance of conserving local ecosystems.

3. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All green spaces and environmental facilities within the university campus.

  • All academic, administrative, and research activities, as well as gardening and construction projects, that may lead to the introduction or spread of invasive species.

4. Principles / Commitments

  1. Environmental Responsibility: The university is committed to safeguarding local biodiversity.

  2. Prevention First: Avoiding the introduction or cultivation of invasive species on campus.

  3. Collaboration: Working with local and international environmental authorities to combat invasive species.

  4. Transparency: Publicly reporting efforts to monitor and manage invasive species.

  5. Education and Awareness: Promoting knowledge about the risks of invasive species and encouraging sustainable practices.

5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

  • Monitoring and Environmental Surveys: Conducting regular surveys to identify and classify invasive species.

  • Preventive Measures:

    • Prohibiting the planting of invasive species.

    • Ensuring cleanliness of tools and equipment to prevent the transfer of seeds or organisms.

  • Management and Control:

    • Removing invasive species through environmentally safe methods.

    • Establishing a rapid response team to address outbreaks or spread of invasive species.

  • Promoting Native Alternatives: Encouraging the planting of native species to strengthen local ecosystems.

  • Awareness Programs: Organizing workshops and campaigns to raise awareness about the risks of invasive species.

6. Responsibilities

  • University Presidency: Overall supervision of policy implementation.

  • College of Environmental Sciences: Managing and overseeing monitoring and control programs.

  • Maintenance and Services Division: Implementing field measures across the campus.

  • Faculty and Students: Participating in awareness programs and environmental initiatives.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Preparing periodic reports on invasive species and tracking their spread.

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of adopted measures and providing recommendations for improvement.

  • Reviewing new projects through environmental assessments prior to implementation.

8. Review and Updates

This policy shall be reviewed every two years, or earlier in response to environmental developments, and updated in line with scientific advances, national standards, and international guidelines.
