1. Title
Policy on Reducing Single-Use Materials – University of Mosul

2. Purpose / Objectives
This policy aims to protect public health and the campus environment from the risks associated with the excessive use of single-use materials, to reduce the spread of diseases, and to minimize harmful waste.

3. Scope
This policy applies to all students, staff, and visitors within the University campus and covers all educational, administrative, and service facilities.

4. Principles / Commitments

  • Public Health: Minimize the circulation of materials that may contribute to the transmission of diseases.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Reduce waste generated from single-use materials.

  • Safety and Responsibility: Ensure proper disposal of such materials through safe and approved channels.

  • Recycling and Reuse: Promote recycling whenever possible and replace harmful materials with environmentally friendly alternatives.

5. Procedures / Implementation Mechanisms

  • Prohibit the circulation and use of single-use materials except when strictly necessary (e.g., certain medical or chemical items).

  • Allocate designated containers for collecting such materials within the campus.

  • Transfer collected materials to specialized facilities for recycling or safe disposal.

  • Replace single-use materials with reusable alternatives wherever possible.

  • Organize awareness campaigns for students and staff on the risks of these materials and the importance of reducing their use.

6. Responsibilities

  • Services Unit, Maintenance and Services Division – Administrative Affairs Department: Direct supervision of collection and ensuring safe disposal.

  • Colleges and Departments: Monitor compliance within their premises and raise awareness among students and staff.

  • Suppliers and Contractors: Comply with University regulations by avoiding the introduction of single-use materials except in cases of absolute necessity.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Conduct periodic reviews of compliance through reports issued by the Services Unit.

  • Measure the annual quantity of single-use materials collected and processed.

  • Evaluate and gradually adopt eco-friendly alternatives across the campus.

8. Periodic Review
This policy shall be reviewed every two years by the Maintenance and Services Division – Administrative Affairs Department, and updated in line with health, environmental, and national legislative developments.
