A scientific awareness lecture delivered by Prof. Dr. Najla Ibrahim Mahmoud Al-Sammak from the College of Medicine / University of Mosul on Monday morning, October 9, 2023, which was attended by a group of students of our college, in which she talked about the most important causes of smoking and its harm to the individual personally and to society in general, as she defined smoking as the process of burning a substance, most of which is tobacco or inhaling the resulting substances, and its history dates back to 5000 years BC to the Babylonian, Indian and Chinese eras, and she also talked about its most important components It is nicotine and tar and their negative effects on the individual, as the statistics of those who use smoking reached more than 8 million people, including 7 million smokers directly and about 1 million non-smokers, who are accompanied by their families, relatives and friends, and finally it shows the most important harms of smoking and its impact on health as a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, as it leads to weakening the immune system and its impact on the risk of osteoporosis and changing the level of hormones and also affects the reproductive system, fertility, skin and hair, causes wrinkles and affects teeth, and according to statistics conducted by the General Assembly of the United Nations and Western countries, it has a direct impact on the global economy, as the annual costs of smoking 🚬 exceed one trillion dollars 💲.
