Ph.D. Discussion Defense in the Department of Economics: “Paths of Economic Performance Indicators Between Monetary Sterilization and Fiscal Discipline Policies – An Analytical Study of a Sample of Developing Countries with Reference to Iraq for the Period 1990–2021” – Tuesday, June 3, 2025

The Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, held the defense of the doctoral discussion titled: “Paths of Economic Performance Indicators Between Monetary Sterilization and Fiscal Discipline Policies – An Analytical Study of a Sample of Developing Countries with Reference to Iraq for the Period 1990–2021.”

The study, submitted by Ph.D. candidate Biyar Mohammed Ahmed in the Department of Economics, aimed to investigate the impact of both monetary sterilization and fiscal discipline policies on key economic performance indicators (inflation rate and economic growth) in selected countries: Iraq, Algeria, Egypt, and Brazil. The research was based on the hypothesis that both policies exert influence on economic performance indicators.

The study reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which is that monetary sterilization had a positive effect on inflation in Iraq, Brazil, and Algeria, while it had a negative effect in Egypt. On the other hand, the impact of fiscal discipline indicators was negative across all four countries (Egypt, Brazil, Iraq, and Algeria), which is attributed to the ability of some countries—particularly oil-producing ones—to cover fiscal deficits through financial surpluses.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Amro Hisham Mohammed from Al-Mustansiriyah University, with membership including Assistant Professor Dr. Nazar Sadiq Elias, Assistant Professor Dr. Mustafa Fadhil Hammadi, Assistant Professor Dr. Ashti Abdul Sattar Abdul Ghani, and Assistant Professor Dr. Zahraa Ahmed Mohammed Tawfiq, with Assistant Professor Dr. Saadoun Hussein Farhan serving as both a committee member and the dissertation supervisor.
