A PhD thesis in the Department of Economics Discusses: “Indicators of Government Social Spending and Their Impact on Reducing Income Inequality: A Study of a Sample of Countries Worldwide” Monday, June 16, 2025

The Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, held a discussion for the doctoral dissertation entitled:
“Indicators of Government Social Spending and Their Impact on Reducing Income Inequality: A Study of a Sample of Countries Worldwide.”

The discussion was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Sinan Zuhair Muhammad Jameel, along with the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs.

This dissertation, presented by the doctoral candidate Ghazwan Salem Atiyah Ahmed from the Department of Economics, aimed to analyze the relationship between government social spending indicators and income inequality. It also sought to estimate the impact of these indicators—namely (expenditure on education, health, and social protection) as a percentage of GDP—on narrowing the income inequality gap as expressed by the Gini coefficient.

The study reached several conclusions, the most important of which is that spending on education contributes to reducing income inequality only in upper-middle-income countries, whereas it does not achieve the same effect in other country groups.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Hashem Muhammad Abdullah, and included the membership of Professor Dr. Bashar Ahmed Al-Iraqi, Professor Dr. Maytham Al-Aibi Ismail from Al-Mustansiriya University, Assistant Professor Dr. Saadoun Hussein Farhan, Assistant Professor Dr. Ibrahim Adeeb Ibrahim, and Assistant Professor Dr. Uday Salem Ali as both a member and the supervisor.
