When minds speak freely… scientific research flourishes.

Freedom of expression is one of the most important principles upon which scientific research is based, as it represents the foundation that allows researchers and thinkers to present ideas and discuss scientific results with complete objectivity and transparency, free from restrictions that might hinder the development of knowledge or limit scientific creativity.
Recognizing the importance of this topic, the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research (C.AFCAR) organized a workshop entitled “Freedom of Expression in Scientific Research,” in collaboration with the Human Rights Division / Sustainable Development Unit at the University Mosul, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The workshop were delivered by Dr. Saeed Khadida Qolo, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mahmood Azzo Hamad, Asst. Prof. Dr. Odai Talal Mahmood, Asst. Lect. Nada Younis Taher, and Agri. Eng. Iman Akram Abdul Karim.
Freedom of expression in scientific and academic institutions enhances a culture of innovation and drives researchers to present new visions that contribute to serving society and achieving sustainable development. Respecting intellectual and scientific diversity is an important factor in building an advanced research environment capable of keeping pace with global developments. At the same time, freedom of expression in scientific research is linked to academic and ethical responsibility, as opinions and results presented must be based on precise scientific foundations and rigorous research methodologies, thereby preserving the standing of scientific institutions and enhancing society’s trust in scientific research and its outcomes.
The lectures of this workshop align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
Scientific freedom of expression remains one of the fundamental pillars for the advancement of nations, as it opens the door for minds to innovate and discover, and contributes to building a knowledge-based society capable of facing challenges and shaping the future.
